Children are more likely to visit the dentist if their parents regularly seek their own dental care, a new study suggests.Research published in the Pediatrics journal shows that if parents do not go to see the dentist, their children are much less likely to make such a trip themselves.
The research, conducted in the US, found financial barriers played a role in the accessing dental care and suggested that children whose parents put off care due to financial reasons are likely to have their own dental care delayed due to cost.
As a result, lead researcher Inyang Isong from the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Center for Child and Adolescent Health Policy said that new strategies to promote oral health should promote care for the whole family.
Earlier this month the Irish Dental Association gave a vote of no confidence in the government over budget cuts for dental care amounting to 110 million.
The organisation argued that the cuts amounted to rationing of services for medical card patients and that some people would go without care.
