DNA test 'could predict best diets'

A simple DNA test could be used to help people determine which diet is most effective for them, according to a new US study.

Stanford University researchers say a person's genetic make-up may predict whether they are likely to lose weight on a low-fat or low-carbohydrate diet regime.

The small preliminary study, the results of which will be presented at an American Heart Association conference this week, involved 133 overweight women.

Scientists found that those on the best diet for their genes lost as much as two to three times more weight over a 12-month period than those who were not.

"Knowing your genotype for low-carb or low-fat diets could help you increase your weight-loss success," the researchers wrote.

However, they stressed that the findings were only preliminary, adding that more investigation would be needed before the effect could be confirmed.

According to research from the latest Survey on Lifestyle, Attitudes and Nutrition in Ireland, more than a third of women and almost a quarter of men in the country are trying to lose weight.
