'Strong links between impotence and heart disease,' expert says
Men experiencing impotence are being urged to undergo thorough medical assessments after a review linked the problem to coronary artery disease (CAD).The findings of the review, conducted by international experts, were published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, and reveal that in around two-thirds of men, CAD is preceded by erectile dysfunction (ED).
With early diagnosis often helping in the treatment of such conditions, the authors stress the need for those with ED to get themselves checked out.
A team of 11 experts from across the world looked at more than 100 studies into the link between ED and CAD.
One study found that men aged between 30 and 39 with moderate to severe ED have a 14 per cent higher risk of developing CAD.
According to the Irish Heart Foundation, coronary heart disease kills around 5,000 people in Ireland every year, making it the most common cause of death in the country.
