Lewis says families should exercise together

Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis has urged parents to treat sport and exercise as a family affair.

According to figures released last week by David Lloyd Leisure, one fifth of children aged six to 11 don't receive any parental support in getting involved in sport outside of school hours.

Lewis said that finding the time was often the main issue for parents, but said this could be negated by families organising their routines to play sports together.

"The message is about getting families together, being aware of the role that sport and activity plays in their lives and making it a lifestyle issue," said the track-and-field star.

"Hopefully, that will encourage them to spend more time together and get the best out of sport as well."

The pinnacle of Lewis's career came at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, when she took the gold medal in the heptathlon.ADNFCR-2528-ID-19809532-ADNFCR
