Follow in the footsteps of triathletes for a healthy heart
The heart adapts to triathlon training by working more efficiently, new findings have revealed.A study of triathletes published in the journal Radiology found that training for the discipline led to improved heart health and function through subtle adaptations.
Lead researcher Michael Lell, associate professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, explained that the study is the first to use MRI to investigate the link between triathlon training and cardiac adaptations.
It was found that the most elite triathletes could manage the same workload with less effort compared to those less adept in the sport.
The findings show that rigorous exercise can produce long-term health benefits and help lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
However, researchers from Sweden and the UK reviewed several large-scale studies on the impact of light or moderately intensive physical activity and found that just 30 minutes of exercise a day reduces the risk of death by 19 per cent.
