A cup of coffee a day can reduce heart disease risk

Drinking a cup of coffee every day could fend off heart disease, new research has revealed.

A study into what enabled people to live to the age of 100 showed that a daily cup of coffee had benefits even for people with high blood pressure.

Experts from the University of Athens, Greece, assessed participants between the ages of 65 and 100, all from the island of Ikaria, where a third of the residents reach the age of 90.

It has previously been suggested that a Mediterranean diet can help to boost heart health and now coffee has been shown to produce benefits for people with hypertension.

Those who took part in the study who consumed between one and two cups a day had the best arterial health, revealing that drinking coffee is good for the elasticity of arteries.

Dr Christina Chrysohoou, who led the research, warned that drinking excessive amounts of the beverage would probably cancel out the benefits.

An earlier study from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Australia, found that women who drank just one cup of tea every day were ten per cent less likely to develop ovarian cancer.ADNFCR-2528-ID-800046933-ADNFCR
