Parents must set a healthy example to kids

Children will be inspired to take up a healthy and active lifestyle if they see their parents doing the same thing, an expert has said.

With the issue of childhood obesity affecting many countries in Europe and beyond, the need for positive messages on healthy eating and exercise is more pressing than ever.

Elaine Sawetz, a fitness and obesity consultant, has urged parents and elder family members to take responsibility for promoting beneficial lifestyle choices to their children and grandchildren.

"Children who see their parents, grandparents and carers following a healthy and active lifestyle tend to join in and learn by example. These habits become a normal part of everyday life for the whole family," she said.

"We know that many children are getting heavier and more children are now overweight than ever before. Being active, children are less likely to develop diabetes or other diseases in later life and are more likely to join in and enjoy themselves."

Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis recently encouraged families to exercise together by heading out to the local park for a game of football or a jog.ADNFCR-2528-ID-800050643-ADNFCR
