Exercise reduces breast cancer risk

Women are being urged to engage in exercise more frequently to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.

According to Arlene Wilkie, director of research at Breast Cancer Campaign, UK, even light physical activity such as a brisk walk can help women ward off the disease.

"Frequent exercise has been shown to lower the risk of breast cancer, therefore any regular physical activity, including walking, swimming and even housework, will help to improve your fitness and reduce your risk," she said.

Research from the World Cancer Research Fund, UK, shows that thousands of cases of breast cancer could be prevented if people engaged in more exercise which raised their heart rate.

While in the UK breast cancer accounts for 31 per cent of all cancers in women, statistics published by Breast Cancer Ireland show that the disease is the most common invasive cancer in Irish women.ADNFCR-2528-ID-800050647-ADNFCR
